I'm tired...

How is everyone? Anything new? Hope all is well.

I hate my state *pokes below*

Flood of '09

Oh yeah, it's bad.

I saw the river for the first time yesterday. It's bad you guys, really really bad. Standing on the edge of the water sandbagging, I could see the river flowing...approximately 500 feet away (I could be way wrong, either way. I'm bad at measuring). And it was rising at 3 inches an hour.

We've had classes canceled all week. They finally just canceled them for the rest of the week today. Students have been pouring in from all over the state. All the colleges and many schools around here have closed as we are told to go sandbag. Plus, many high schools are just coming up here just to help. My own high school is coming tomorrow.

Personally, I've sandbagged about 5-6 hours Monday and Tuesday. I only helped for a couple hours today. I'm sooooo tired...and sore as hell. I can't move my arms without some sort of pain, and one of my wrists is stiff and sore(the wrist I used to support the bottom of 40lb sandbags). Oh, and my hands are scraped up and scratched beyond belief. That's what I get for not wearing (or really having) gloves. I just couldn't work today...I tied bags today (wtf? We didn't have to do that before!) but that's all.

Doesn't help that it's SNOWING. Rain and snow all week. It's miserably cold, wet, and muddy out. GOD FUCKING DAMMIT MINNESOTA!!!!! :X.

River is supposed to crest at 41 feet on Sunday, I believe.

I gotta go back out tomorrow and Friday...granted, I don't...but I should. They need all the help they can get. In the newspaper, it said 1.3 of 2 million bags had been made and set. They need help.

UGH!!!

*sigh* if you want to do your own research, check this newspaper site, and news site:

Just a little sarcasm...

Who says you don't learn anything in college? In the past week I've learned LOADS of stuff.

1. School can be canceled for a flood, even when your school isn't in the danger zone...because they need all the labor they can get.

2. How to fill sandbags. 2-3 shovelfuls of sand per bag. Quickly throw the filled bag aside, grab another bag, open, repeat. Sometimes you gotta tie the bags too

3. The technology behind filling sandbags. While there are machines that fill bags, the standard method is usually a ladder set on some sawhorses, with traffic cones set between the ladder rungs, the top of which are cut to allow more sand to go through. Sometimes various wooden stands are used, but the traffic cone is standard. Don't believe me? Look at pictures:

4. The assembly line. No, it's not a real assembly line. This is a line of people passing/throwing sandbags to each other, to the end of the line where they are placed. And if there are big gaps, people will throw the bags at you. Very heavy bags sometimes

5. Red River High school from GF are the muddiest school when it comes to sandbagging :XD: But they were entertaining.

6. If the river crests at 41 ft. the dike needs to be at 42-43 feet.

7. You can see the river flowing...from far across a deep lake of water. It's WEIRD. And saddening

8. I'm going to take the idea of a man in the Fargo/Moorhead Newspaper. If you think that youth is completely doomed, that this generation is nothing but lazy deadbeats, you can "kiss my muddied backside"

Students from this region, from all over the freakin' STATE are coming to help. Without them(us) this wouldn't be possible. You won't be able to read all of this without registering, but just the first few lines give the gist of what the article is about: [link]

9. Heard yesterday: "Gawkers need to get the hell out of here. If they don't, they either get arrested or start sandbagging."

10. It sucks when you have no rubber rainboots or boots in general and have to wear tennis shoes. Sucks even worse when you sink into mud over your shoes. You'll fight this at first, not wanting to lose complete dignaty and get that dirty. Then you realize that it's pointless and squish/sink/get stuck in the cold slippery mud over your shoes

God I hope we're successful...We're fighing the freakin' Red River of the North. That's a challenge...especially factoring in the tributaries, particularly the Wild Rice River. That stupid river can make or break.

I hope it's the former... :(
